Credit Counseling
As a Waco and Killeen bankruptcy attorney, I’ve watched with some interest since the changes to the U.S. bankruptcy laws took effect in 2005. One of the changes that intrigued me the most was the requirement that people attend credit counseling before filing bankruptcy. Credit counseling, in and of itself, is not necessarily a bad idea; however, the way most people complete the required counseling is a problem.
See, the majority of the credit counselors approved for this counseling are owned by credit card companies. It’s a bit like hiring a wolf to watch your sheep – do these companies really have your best interests at heart?
Fortunately, not all credit counselors are under the direction of credit card companies. We use credit counselors who are not associated with the credit card industry, and who offer counseling over the Internet or phone in the privacy of your home.
The changes to the U.S. bankruptcy laws also imposed a requirement that you take a debt management course during your bankruptcy case. Syndicated talk-show host and financial planner Dave Ramsey has created a very interesting and informative class that is available to all of our clients on DVD. Dave has filed bankruptcy himself, and with his experience really gives you insight into how to budget your finances and restore your financial life after your bankruptcy discharge. Best of all, Dave is hilarious. You will truly enjoy his DVD.
The cost for both of these courses is included in the fees you pay to our firm. My staff will answer all your questions concerning signing up for both of these helpful courses.
